On s'amuse, on joue.

---------------------
I wanted to develop here a little something about the creative process. I had already written an article about that here. Since that time, I have worked quite a lot with this process and read other things about it.

In the creative process, the most difficult thing is... to start! Seriously! To start by taking time, and then accept the emptiness and the chaos of the beginning. To start and to follow your intuition. Then let the process unfold. Associate one thing with another, then another one, try a color, cut, and then go back. This is intimidating because this is far from our daily habit of action-reaction-outcome-performance. We are here in the field of experimentation, just "to see where it goes." We can then find the pleasure of the game. Just for the fun of playing. We don't judge the result at this stage, whether it's beautiful or not. We just have fun, we play. In fact, at this stage, we must above all be ok with the ideas of :

  • Wasting our time, in the sense that there is not a obvious result
  • making mistakes, to try, to risk
  • going out of our comfort zone
  • having a lot of "rubbish"

It's a difficult thing is to give you the permission (at least for me). But once you take it, the confusing beginning becomes exciting: everything is possible!

To help me to give me this permission, I give myself a frame. This can be a time-space, theme, constraints (e.g. limited myself to a technique, two or three colors): this is a paradox, but it helps so much creativity to let go, be free.

And then I go back to something that reassures me, gives me the feeling of "going forward" (I'm a type A, right?). I come back to my base, my comfort zone. For me, it's back to a more technical work, such working on the computer. I like its technical, controlled, monitored aspect. It reassures me. Or, organization and research: that I know how to do and I like to rely on it. It seems important to me to build on my strengths. Getting a bit unsafe, then back to shore.

All this is a balance (and balance is made of a succession of imbalance!), a journey to accept, to discover and learn. Learn how to play that game. It is worth of it because creating something is to feel intensely alive.

If you're interested, I can not enough recommend you the great book of Twyla Tharp on how to develop a creative habit. For me, it's the bible on this subject.
